Description
If Idaho, Oregon and Washington were united as an independent nation...
Their combined population of 12.4 million people would make it the 74th most populous county, between Chad at 12.8 million people and South Sudan at 11.3 million people.
Their combined economies of $578.3 billion dollars would make it the 21st highest nominal GDP, between Switzerland at $631.1 billion and Iran at $551.5 billion dollars.
In terms of their contribution to the total US population and GDP, these states account for approximately 4% of both our people and our economy.
I suppose I should mention that this nation would be closer to the borders of the old Oregon Country than it would be to modern conceptions of Cascadia, although I did choose the latter's flag. In general there is a tremendous amount of overlap between the two concepts.
As to how this would fare as an independent nation, I really have no idea. If Jared Diamond's Collapse is correct in positing that deforestation is the number one killer of civilizations, then this nation of forests would have a strong footing indeed.
